Tips and Hints

Making your photo fit your print size
Tips 1
Diagram 1
Not all cameras take a perfect size image that will fit your 10x15cm photos or enlargements.

With Kodak Direct it is easy to see how much of your photo will be printed. However if things don't appear to be right, eg. (cropped heads or important areas missing) you can make adjustments.

Here's how..
1. Choose the orange spanner next to the photo to open your choice of sizes (Diagram 1)
2. Choose the crop, edit or fix button
3. From the zoom and crop section, choose fit picture inside (Diagram2)
You will then see a preview of your photo fitting fully in the frame. This will add white edges to 2 sides of the photo.
4. Don't forget to hit the save button (Diagram 3)

Guidelines for Digital Prints
What are the guidelines for digital prints?

Before you order prints from your digital pictures, you should check the following characteristics of your image files:

  1. Set your digital camera to capture jpeg images with high resolution and low compression
  2. Kodak Direct only accepts jpeg format images
  3. Check that your picture resolution is adequate for the print size you want. (See below for resolution guidelines)
  4. Check that your picture size matches the aspect ratio of the print size you want. (See below for explanation of aspect ratios)

Image Resolution Guidelines

To ensure you receive good quality prints from your digital pictures, Kodak Direct recommends comparing the resolution of your pictures to Kodak Direct resolution guidelines. Using these guidelines will help you produce the best quality prints possible from your digital pictures.

Please note that Kodak Direct guidelines are based ONLY on the overall resolution of your picture, and not on the overall quality or clarity of the original picture. Kodak Direct are not responsible for the original picture being blurry or out-of-focus, even if there is sufficient resolution.

Pictures that fall below Kodak Direct resolution guidelines may look okay when viewed online, but will appear blurry and pixilated (i.e.; the image will appear in blocks with jagged rather than straight edges) when enlarged and printed.

If you choose to ignore Kodak Direct guidelines and order a print from an image that is below the guidelines, Kodak Direct cannot guarantee the quality of the final print and you will automatically exclude yourself from Kodak Direct money back or replacement policy. *

To check the resolution of your pictures on your computer refer to the image file's "properties" in your picture viewing software.

Kodak Direct resolution guidelines are as follows:

Image Resolution Maximum print size Aspect Ratio is:
Less than 640 x 420 Not recommended for printing Image height/width
640 x 420 Absolute minimum resolution for 4x6(results will vary) Aspect Ratio of 1:1.5
1024 x 680 Recommended resolution for 4x6 Aspect Ratio of 1:1.5
1152 x 820 Minimum recommended resolution for 5x7 Aspect Ratio of 1:1.4
1600 x 1280 Minimum recommended resolution for 8x10 Aspect Ratio of 1:1.25
2000 x 1570 Minimum recommended resolution for 11x14 Aspect Ratio of 1:1.27

Image Capture Settings on Your Digital Camera

Kodak Direct also recommend that you use the least amount of jpeg compression possible. Jpeg file compression is set on your camera when you capture your images. This is a setting on cameras that is sometimes called "quality" or "compression". Be aware that high resolution and low compression files will increase the time it takes to upload an image, however this will produce better printing results.

Sizing Your Digital Pictures To Fit Standard Print Sizes (Aspect Ratio)

Before you order prints from your digital pictures, in addition to checking your file resolution, you need to make sure the height and width of your image is in proportion to the print size you want.

The height and width of a picture is known as the aspect ratio. This is the relationship between its height and width. For example, a square image has an aspect ratio of 1:1 i.e.; the width is equal to the height.

The following aspect ratios apply to Kodak Direct standard print sizes. It is recommended that you crop or size your images to match these ratios.

For a 4x6" print your picture should have an aspect ratio of 1:1.5
For a 5x7" print your picture should have an aspect ratio of 1:1.4
For a 8x10" print your picture should have an aspect ratio of 1:1.25

Kodak Direct will try to fit the picture to the print size you want. However, if your image does not match the aspect ratio for the print size, you may receive a print with cropping or masking borders on either top or sides of the print, depending on the orientation of your picture. If you send an image that does not match the aspect ratio of the print size you want, you will automatically exclude yourself from Kodak Direct money back or replacement policy. *
